Oceans Eleven and successful Teamwork

 Visualizing Teamwork

I have been off from work for
medical reasons and have been forced to stay home for a couple of weeks. This has
give me the time for lazy things including catching up on some TV series and watching all time favorite movies.

I am the type of person that sometimes
see things like a scene from a movie in my mind. I know, it sounds weird, but
I prefer to think about it as an special attribute. Some people called themselves visual and I’m
one of them. There are certain movies that I can translate from the TV screen to my daily real life.

One of those all time favorite movies is Ocean’s Eleven. Since that movie came out I have always associated it with great teamwork, no matter where I have worked at the time. I have developed the tendency to
mentally separate people at work and classify them as part of the Ocean’s Team, even though sometimes I end up with more than “Eleven” team members.

It’s funny when you find yourself identifying roles you see on your colleagues and creating a team that could do this or that project, as the crew in Ocean’s movies.

The fascinating thing of this exercise is that it helps you to look deeper into others people abilities and acknowledge their skills. It is such an stimulating and captivating way of thinking when you find yourself filling out the blank for each character or notice that you are missing one of the players to complete the gang. Sometimes you won’t find all the character at your workplace or you might have two or three on the same roles.

Therefore, next time to find yourself assigning movie roles to your colleagues, marking your mental checklist, or nodding when you find the one for “logistics”, “negotiator”, “gadget geek” , “the idea seller”, “the bluffer” do not worry too much about your mental sanity, it is normal. Besides, you are not alone. There is a great bunch of people just like you out there, including myself.

What I usually do to laugh a little when I have this movie visualization moments, is having a nice coffee and add another mark on my mental checklist. Remember what they say, cou-cou people tend to have  happier life, so it’s not such a bad thing even if you are not planning on another Italian Job
Enjoy your day, see you again tomorrow
